Director of Development
Reports to: Executive Director
Supervises: Development Associate and Volunteers
Position Summary: The Development Director is responsible for overseeing the planning, scheduling and coordination of fundraising activities and programs in order to ensure targeted goals are met as well as acting as a liaison to outside consultants related to development and communications.
General Administrative:
- Helps to develop and implement a strategic development plan which includes short-term and long-range goals.
- Oversees the planning of annual activities (i.e., appeals, events, grants, campaigns) to support annual budget requirements.
- Ensures that development activities and mailings are coordinated with Auxiliary and program activities on a master calendar.
- Develops and monitors fundraising budgets (gala, appeals, PR).
- Helps reconcile fundraising revenues and expenses.
- Works with the Executive Director and Development Committee to increase and diversify foundation, corporate, government, congregation and individual support.
- Coordinates and supports the Development Committee.
- Ensures that procedures (i.e., gala, donor software) are developed and updated as needed.
- Ensures thank you letters are timely and updated annually.
- Works closely with the Director of Volunteer Services and Community Outreach who is the staff liaison to the Auxiliary.
- Participates in community outreach and education.
- Works with the Executive Director on all major campaigns.
Grant Requests:
- Oversees the development and updating of grant requests, including the need statement, to foundations, corporations, churches, organizations and government bodies.
- Ensures that due dates/deadlines for grants and follow-up reports are tracked and timely.
- For government grants and others as needed, ensures that specific budget requests and matching funds are not duplicated in another grant.
- Develops relationships with grantors through annual phone contacts, visits and/or tours of The Women's Home.
- Collaborates with program staff to ensure goals/outcomes are reflected accurately in grants and follow-up reports.
- Ensures that research for new grants is done annually.
Individual Appeals:
- Ensures there are three direct mail appeals a year (spring, summer, and holiday).
- Coordinates small events to introduce individuals to The Home and to recognize major donors.
- Identifies and cultivates major donors.
- Coordinates the development and implementation of planned giving
Events
- Ensures the annual gala achieves fundraising and public relations goals and procedures are followed.
- Coordinates consultants, staff and volunteers who provide support for the gala and other events.
- Acts as the staff liaison for third party fundraisers.
- Attends Auxiliary events.
Communications:
- Acts as staff liaison to ad agency and or other consultants.
- Ensures media coverage for major events is handled.
- Oversees production of newsletter.
- Ensures all graphic materials are approved as needed.
- Helps maintain consistent image/brand.
Donor Software
Oversees the utilizations of donor software to ensure gifts (including in-kind) are recorded correctly and donor information is accurate so that reports and lists can be generated. Works with Finance Director to reconcile revenue (cash and pledges) from donor side of the software with financial side (Blackbaud). Ensures that outstanding pledges are tracked and invoiced on a timely basis. Ensures that the mailing lists are updated annually.
Other Responsibilities
Attends Board meetings as needed (Board of Directors, Auxiliary and Advisory Board). Attends continuing education conferences on development. Attends staff meetings as required. Attends resident functions (i.e., award banquets, holiday party) as required.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in related field. Five years experience in fundraising, preferably in grant writing, special events and capital campaigns. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Some understanding of non-profit accounting. Ability to work as a team member with a variety of people. Commitment to helping others.
