Our 2017 Triumph Luncheon Was a Glorious Event!

On Friday, November 17, two hundred seventy-five guests gathered at the Houstonian Hotel to honor some of Houston’s most selfless community members and to support The Women’s Home.  ABC13’s Gina Gaston graciously served as emcee.  The Houston Grand Opera’s Zoie Reams, accompanied by pianist Blake Salter, delighted guests with a live performance of “Ain’t That Good News.”

Beloved and infinitely generous Houston philanthropists Lester and Sue Smith were named Lifetime Achievement Honorees.  Longtime TWH supporter, board president, and Capital Campaign chair Karen Ostrum George was honored with the Leadership award.  Stuart Nelson was recognized for Program Excellence for his work with The Women’s Home’s Spirituality Program.  St. Martin’s Episcopal Church was given the Community Support award for their unwavering and generous support of TWH over the years.

Lester Smith and Liz Murray, both of whom have endured intense hardship in their lives, shared their stories of resilience and inspired everyone present.

The elegant luncheon raised awareness for The Home, raised support for our far-reaching programs, and raised the spirits of all who attended.  It was a triumphant day, indeed.

The Luncheon will feature two wonderful speakers who will share their Triumph stories with us.

Successful Texas oilman, philanthropist and two-time national ballroom dance champion Lester Smith will share his personal story of beating the odds time and time again.  A native of Wharton, Texas, Lester is a two-time cancer survivor and double lung transplantee.  Drawing from a place of gratitude for the life-saving care he has received, The Lester & Sue Smith Foundation has provided over $150 million to support medical research, humanities, arts and education in Houston and across the United States.  His inspiring story of strength, resilience and courage can be found in the pages of his first book, ‘You Gotta Dance Like No One’s Watching” which will be gifted to all luncheon guests.

Liz Murray will share her fascinating, inspirational story of growing up with two drug addicted parents who she began supporting at age 10. Homeless at age 15, the death of her mother was the wake-up call that made her break free of her circumstances and pursue a different path for her life. While living on the streets of New York, she completed and graduated from high school in just two years. Overcoming horrible odds, she won a full scholarship and was accepted to Harvard University. Murray offers one of the most moving, elegant and uplifting tales you will ever hear.empowering them to return to society as productive and self-sufficient women. With your support, The Women’s Home can continue to serve women and their families as they work to rebuild their lives.
